The Smoky Mountain Chapter of the American Wine Society hosted a “Méthode Champenoise” tasting December 9, 2016. Twenty-five members tasted blind, eight different sparkling wines.  Four from Champagne, two from Spain, one from South Africa, and one from California.  

The wines were tasted in flights of two:

1.    2011 Juve y Camps Brut Nature Reserva
2.    2010 Marques de Gelida Brut Exclusive

3.    NV Graham Beck Brut, Western Cape
4.    NV Pol Roger Brut Reserve, Epernay

5.    2007 Roederer Cuvee L'Ermitage Brut
6.    Agrapart Brut Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru  7 Crus

7.    2006 Louis Roederer Brut Nature, Stark
8.    Louis Roederer Brut Premier Graphic


The favorites in order were:

The members voted the “NV Louis Roederer Brut Premier Graphic”, the favorite of the evening.  The second favorite was the “NV Agrapart Brut Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru 7 Crus” and the third was “2010 Marques de Gelida Brut Exclusive”, a Cava.
Dosage is the number of grams per liter of sugar added for the secondary fermentation.  The higher the dosage, the sweeter the wine, although all of the wines tasted were Brut or drier.  Interestingly the favorite of most of the people was the wine with the highest amount of dosage.
